Dear Downtown Tulsa Salsa Lover,
We are excited to present the Second Annual 2010 SalsaFest at the Chapman Centennial Green, in the heart of downtown Tulsa, on Friday, June 18, 2010. SalsaFest is a fundraiser for Sustainable Tulsa, a 501(c)3 organization that promotes responsible economic growth, environmental stewardship, and quality of life for all.
SalsaFest is a free outdoor festival where the main attraction is a salsa-making/tasting contest. Local restaurants and home cooks are invited to compete and see if their salsa really is award-winning. Salsa contestants will use at least one Oklahoma-grown ingredient for the public and celebrity judges. There are three categories: Spicy, Traditional and Alternative. Judges, and the public will vote on their favorites. Awards will be given to the three public chosen winners, an overall winner, the celebrity judges’ choice and the salsa using the most local ingredients. The winners of each award will then toss 300 pounds of tomatoes off a seven-story building across the street from the festival!
In additional to the salsa contest, SalsaFest will feature a chili pepper- eating contest, live Salsa music, Salsa dancing lessons, children’s activities, local art booths and, this year’s exciting new addition, a Chihuahua costume contest and race.
In 2009, SalsaFest brought a diverse crowd of more than 1,500 people to downtown Tulsa and raised more than $2,500 for Sustainable Tulsa. In addition to the impact Salsafest had on Sustainable Tulsa, it also boosted sales at many downtown businesses.
This year’s festival will be bigger and better, but we need your help to make it happen. The proceeds from SalsaFest 2010 will fund the design of an educational and environmentally friendly playground in the core business district of downtown Tulsa. As Tulsa grows and continues to meet the demands of a healthy core, its downtown needs citizens who will champion downtown events and the creation of family-friendly activities in the heart of our city.
