Water Quality and Conservation

Water quality is impacted by the practices we use in our homes and on our yards.  Nonpoint source pollution is the collection of pollution that washes off your yards (i.e. pesticides and fertilizers) and leaks from our cars, down our streets, into sewers and eventually into creeks and the Arkansas River.  Most home owners spend more money and use more water to water their yards than any other home use.  Conserve water because each drop requires money and energy to treat, transport, and heat and cool.

Greening the (918) Water Quality and Conservation Goal
Tulsa continues to provide healthy drinking water to all residents; to discharge successfully treated wastewater back into the water cycle; and to educate all residents about the effects of non-point source water pollution.

Green Tips

Greening up our water:

  • Plant trees and plants that require less water and chemicals to maintain.
  • Mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds
  • Water grass and trees more heavily, but less often, saves water and builds stronger roots.
  • Make sure to water during the early morning hours, or evening when temperatures and wind speed are the lowest (this reduces losses from evaporation).
  •  Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when full.

Action

Each Greening the (918) seminar will have action steps that the community will collectively develop each evening. Additionally each seminar will have a Strategy Team that will assist in putting the actions into motion for the Tulsa Area.   Please Water Quality and Conservation Strategy Session Graphically Facilitated Notes and Water Quality and Conservation Strategy Session Linear Notes for more information on the results of the Water Quality and Conservation seminar.
